Contemporary Townhouse Passive House

Brooklyn Heights Passive Carriage House

We were excited to partner with BIA Interiors and the young family who owns this carriage house to create a high-performance home in historic Brooklyn Heights.

Before
The first floor of the existing carriage house housed a multicar garage. Converting most of the garage into living space created a bright, open kitchen, living room, and dining area.

Opening the stair hallway at the front of the house connected the new living space to the second floor and provided an opportunity to design a unique sculptural stair.

Our strategy for the front facade focused on bringing the openings into harmony with each other while preserving the original character of the carriage house.

The staircase was built off-site by a team of talented artisans, then transported to the site, where it serves as a focal point connecting all levels of the home.

A penthouse was carefully massed to be invisible from the street. Finishing the roof deck provided a space for peaceful outdoor living, and a large skylight allows light to pour down the staircase.
